Inbox - The Week's Whisky News (February 22, 2019)

Welcome to Inbox, our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our WFE email. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday.

Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.  This is the news that has grabbed our attention this week.

________

Benromach
The small Speyside distillery of Benromach has announced two new additions to their Heritage Collection - the Heritage 1972 Vintage and the Heritage 1977 Vintage. Both have been bottled from single American oak re-fill hogshead casks. The Benromach Heritage 1972 Vintage is a 46 year old single malt and was bottled from cask number 4471 in December 2018 at its natural cask strength of 55.7% ABV. "We are proud to build on the popularity of previous Benromach vintage releases from the 1970s with these unique single cask bottlings that represent different moments in time from the distillery’s rich history. The release of these two vintage expressions is an outstanding start to an exciting year for Benromach."
Keith Cruickshank - Distillery Manager at Benromach.

The Benromach Heritage 1977 Vintage is released at 41 years of age and also at its natural cask strength, this time of 49.6% ABV. Both will be available via selected specialist whisky retailers in selected world markets. Local prices and taxes will vary depending on location.

Compass Box
The independent whisky making company at Compass Box have announced one of their rarest and oldest blends to date - Tobias & The Angel. This blended malt contains just two single malts from the Caol Ila and Clynelish distilleries, and both have been matured in American oak re-fill hogshead casks. The Clynelish used is 24 years of age and the Caol Ila is 'considerably older' according to the press release. Tobias & The Angel is bottled at 48.2% ABV and is non chill-filtered and of natural colour. There are just 2,634 bottles available and these will be released worldwide through specialist whisky retailers from March 1st. Each bottle will cost £450/ $500 US.

GlenDronach
The Aberdeenshire distillery of GlenDronach has announced the release of a 25 years old limited edition single malt - the 1993 Master Vintage. This age has been identified by Master Blender Rachel Barrie as one of the 'sweet spots' for GlenDronach and she has hand selected a small number of ex-Oloroso and ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks for this bottling, all of which were distilled and filled in 1993. It has been bottled at the natural cask strength of 48.2% ABV and is non chill-filtered and of natural colour.

The GlenDronach 1993 Master Vintage is available now worldwide via specialist whisky retailers, with the exception of the USA where it will be released in October. The exact number of bottles has not been revealed but each will cost £250/ $325 US.

"I hope sherry cask connoisseurs around the world enjoy the GlenDronach 1993 Master Vintage, as an example of the best sherry cask maturation. With a quarter of a century slowly maturing in our renowned casks from Andalucía, the whisky has developed profound layers of depth and complexity."
Rachel Barrie.
