Review | Kingsbarns Coaltown

Coaltown represents the third permanent whisky in the core single malt range of Kingsbarns, the Lowland craft distillery that pioneered the Fife artisan distilling revolution. It joins the ex-bourbon and ex-red wine cask Doocot and ex-Oloroso sherry cask matured Balcombe as permenant expressions. The name is inspired by Coaltown of Wemyss - a small coal mining village in Fife, located just north of Kirkcaldy, which has close links to the distillery's owners. The whisky has undergone full maturation in American oak casks that have previously held peated whisky. These have been sourced from an unnamed distillery.

Then on his next visit he talks about and opens a new bottle of The Hive, a Speyside-based blended malt from the family-owned Wemyss Malts. Watch both videos to discover more about each whisky and to find out his thoughts and tasting notes. We hope you enjoy them.

Review - Nectar Grove

The Nectar Grove is a blended malt created using Highland single malts and finished in ex-Madeira wine casks. It is released in to the Limited Edition series, all of which are bottled at 46% ABV. The series has been crafted from whiskies held within the Wemyss family's portfolio of casks and the names reflect the expected flavour characteristics of each whisky. In the case of Nectar Grove this is a distinct fruity character from the Madeira wine. Other expressions in the Limited Edition series include Kiln Embers and Velvet Fig.

Review - Treacle Chest & Vanilla Burst by Wemyss Malts

The Wemyss family have released these two new whiskies as the first in a new series called The Family Collection. The collection has been crafted from whiskies held within the Wemyss family's own private portfolio of casks. These first two releases - entitled Treacle Chest and Vanilla Burst - represent two differing styles of whisky, one has been matured in ex-Sherry casks and the other in ex-bourbon casks. The names refer to the expected flavour characteristics from each cask type.

New release - Lord Elcho

The Lord Elcho is a new 'no age statement' release by independent spirits company Wemyss Malts. It joins the award winning 15 years old expression, which was released a couple of years ago and represented the company’s first foray into the world of premium blended whisky.  Both are blended whiskies that have been created using some of the company's finest single malt and single grain whiskies, and are designed to compliment the Wemyss range of single cask malt whiskies.

Our Top 10 - Independent Bottling Companies

The world of the independent whisky bottling companies can seem confusing, especially when in your whisky journey.  However a few pieces of basic information can help - this opens up a huge new corner of the industry and offers many more products to choose from and taste. Essentially, these companies buy casks from the distilleries, or send them empty casks to be filled and stored, and then carefully choose when to bottle and release them.
