Our Top 10 Whiskies of 2022

This is always our favourite post to write each year. The Top 10 is something we first began way back in 2009 and within it we celebrate the finest new whisky releases of that calendar year. Our first selection crowned Benromach 10 years old as our Whisky of the Year. 

However, some time ago we decided to no longer give a top prize. Instead, each of the ten whiskies that we have chosen is a winner in its own right and for differing reasons. As the world continued to come out of the Covid-19 pandemic and its associated restrictions in 2022, the whisky world responded with some excellent releases. It has been difficult to select just ten to be honest, given that we have sampled close to 150 whiskies this year.

Review / Benromach 40 years old (2022 Edition)

The small traditional Speyside distillery of Benromach has announced the second annual release of its rare 40 years old. It follows a similar 2021 release, which scooped the Best In Show prize at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2022. The new edition has been created from a handful of ex-sherry casks selected by Keith Cruickshank, the Distillery Manager at Benromach. It is the distillery's oldest age statement release.

Our Top 10 Whiskies of 2019

Another year has passed and as we pass in to a new decade, it is time for one of our favourite blog posts - our top 10 whiskies from last year. Everyone will have a different opinion about what should and should not be on such a list. Our list is simply our favourites with no criteria, such as price or availability applied, or agenda.

2019 saw seemingly more whiskies released than ever before. The ever growing number of new distilleries saw some bottle their first ever products, established brands put new whiskies in to their core ranges, classic whiskies were re-invented and some distilleries pushed the boundaries with the use of experimental or unorthadox casks. The competitions that we both judge on saw record levels of entries, reflecting this vibrancy and innovation .

Review - Benromach 50 years old

This whisky is the oldest ever single malt release from the small Speyside distillery of Benromach. The Benromach 50 years old is taken from a rare single re-fill ex-Oloroso sherry hogshead cask (Cask #2003). This was distilled and filled in 1969, and has been maturing in a dunnage warehouse at Benromach ever since. The antique cask was hand selected by Keith Cruikshank, who has been the Distillery Manager since 2000, and it has yielded just 125 bottles. These will be available in selected specialist whisky retailers and other high-end stores worldwide.

Review - Benromach Peat Smoke Sherry Cask Matured

This limited edition whisky is from the small Speyside distillery of Benromach and uses some of their rare heavily peated spirit. The Benromach Peat Smoke Sherry Matured uses spirit that was made using heavily peated barley, which they only produce for a short period each year, and then filled to first-fill ex-sherry hogshead casks. The spirit used was distilled and filled to cask in 2018 and bottled in late 2018. Just 6,500 bottles will be available in specialist whisky retailers in selected markets worldwide. It has been bottled at the natural cask strength of 59.9% ABV and is of natural colour and non chill-filtered. A bottle will cost £65/€75.
