Distillery Visit / Ad Gefrin

With Ad Gefrin, England has its newest single malt whisky distillery. It also has the country’s most northernly, sitting just a few miles from the Scottish border in the small town of Wooler in the far north of Northumberland. With its opening last month, Ad Gefrin brings the total number of distilleries making whisky in England to 40. Matt was invited for a visit.

________

Ad Gefrin is impressive. From the road it cuts an imposing figure with its glass-fronted still house showing passers-by that whisky is now being made there. The £16 million project was conceived and funded by the Ferguson family and is unlike any distillery that you will see. The family’s love of history and whisky has been combined in a unique way. But more on that later …

Review / Cotswolds 'Hearts & Crafts' Banyuls Cask

This whisky is the fourth edition in the limited edition Hearts & Crafts series from the English distillery of Cotswolds. The Cotswolds Hearts & Crafts Banyuls Cask has experienced a full maturation in a small batch of French oak casks that were previously filled with Banyuls, a regional sweet dessert wine from the south west of France. The series is inspired by the Art & Crafts movement championed by famous former Cotswolds resident William Morris. Morris-inspired designs are featured on a special packaging tube and neck tag. The Banyuls Cask follows three previous releases - the Sauternes Cask, Pineau des Charentes Cask and Rum Cask.

Review / Wire Works Caduro

This new whisky is the first permanent whisky to be released by the English distillery of White Peak. It follows a successful year-long series of award-winning small batch and single cask bottlings. Wire Works Caduro, named after a brand of cable made at the Johnson & Nephew factory that is now home to the distillery, has been matured in American and French oak casks. These are first-fill ex-bourbon and ex-red wine STRs (shaved, toasted and recharred), which were filled with lightly peated single malt. Despite only just being released Caduro has already claimed a Gold Medal at the IWSC (International Wine & Spirits Challenge) 2023. It was the only English single malt to achieve this.

Review / Powers Irish Rye

This new addition to the Powers core range is the first ever Irish whiskey to be made from 100% Irish rye. The release comes following trials at the Midleton distillery in Co. Cork, where Powers is distilled and matured alongside other well know brands such as Jameson and Redbreast. It has used an archive recipe uncovered by Carol Quinn, the Senior Achivist at Irish Distillers. As part of the trials Irish Distillers commissioned the planting of rye crops at Cooney Furlong Farm in Co. Wexford. This was chosen due to its proximity to the ancestral home of the Powers family - Edermine House.

Distillery Visit / White Peak

Nestled next to the bustling River Derwent in the heart of the English county of Derbyshire there is a quiet whisky revolution going on. This is where the White Peak distillery is located, close to the small town of Ambergate near Matlock.

They have wasted no time in joining the English whisky elite and have already won several awards despite only releasing their first whisky just over a year ago. Matt took a trip to the Peak District to take a look for ourselves.

________

Several years ago, Max and Claire Vaughan had a dream. That dream was to open an English whisky distillery in their home county of Derbyshire. This became a reality in 2015 and White Peak was born. In doing so, it would become Derbyshire's first ever single malt and join the ever-expanding English whisky scene.
