Whisky For Everyone / 15 Years of Blogging

When our first blog post popped up on 28 March 2008 it was difficult to imagine that Whisky For Everyone would still be going 15 years later. Our fledgling interest in whisky, and Scotch in particular, led us to want to find out more. Writing things down seemed a good way to make facts, figures and tasting notes stick. If people read what we wrote then so be it - we gave it a working title of 'Whisky For Everyone' and it was our vehicle for learning.

Review / Perpetuity Blend

This whisky is a new blended Scotch from the Port of Leith distillery in Leith, Edinburgh. Perpetuity will be an ongoing bottling to be released in batches. The whiskies are taken from the blending team's 'perpetual vat' - this sees surplus whisky from previous bottlings continually married together. Half will always remain with new part-casks added. The first batch contains differing percentages of two single malts (21.9% of Glentauchers 6 years old from first-fill ex-Oloroso sherry hogheads and 23.9% of Deanston 9 years old from ex-bourbon barrels) and two single grains (32% of North British 7 years old from virgin American oak barrels and 22.2% of North British 13 years old from ex-bourbon barrels).

Review / Laphroaig 10 years old Sherry Oak Finish

The Sherry Oak Finish is a recent addition to the core range of the famous Islay single malt of Laphroaig. It was introduced in mid-2021. The whisky follows the same maturation path as the classic Laphroaig 10 years old, the best seller within the range, for most of its life. This takes place in American oak ex-bourbon casks. For the final 12 to 18 months the whisky is transferred to ex-Oloroso sherry barrels. The Laphroaig 10 years old Sherry Oak Finish is bottled at a higher strength of 48% ABV than the classic 10 years old. It is also a higher price (you should expect to pay around £60 for a bottle) and can be found through specialist retailers worldwide.

Review / Gulliver's 47 PX Sherry Casks

This whisky is the latest limited edition bottling from the English single malt brand of Gulliver's. The Gulliver's 47 PX Sherry Casks is a whisky that was distilled for the brand at the St. George's distillery in Norfolk. It has had its full maturation in ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. The brand aims to showcase the skills of artisan producers and is named after the adventures of Samuel Gulliver in 1747. He was an explorer who travelled the globe discovering new wines, spirits and liqueurs to bring back to the UK. His business was located in the town of Banbury. As a result, the brand carries the tagline of 'An Adventurous Spirit'. It is also the official whisky of the England Rugby Union team.

Review / King's Inch Single Malt

This whisky is a new single malt whisky that is distilled and matured in Glasgow. The exact location of where it is made is not revealed but the major suspicion is that it is produced by the Glasgow distillery, especially as one of the brand's founders was formerly employed there - Dr. Jack Mayo. The brand is owned by Courageous Spirits, who also own the popular Glas We Gin, and is named after an island that was found in the River Clyde. King's Inch Island is now part of the southern bank following an extensive dredging project. A king's inch was also an ancient measurement of barley. It is designed to be an urban whisky from a city steeped in industrial and artistic history.

Distillery Visit / Dalmore

The Dalmore distillery and its range of single malts are held in high regard by whisky drinkers and collectors alike. Sitting in a gorgeous location on the shores of the Cromarty Firth and looking across to the Black Isle, this north Highland distillery is currently closed to the public.

The reason - a combination of the recent Covid pandemic and forthcoming planned extension work that will see the production capacity doubled. We were delighted to receive an invite to visit last November.

________

Dalmore was founded in 1839 by Alexander Matheson and is located in the small Highland town of Alness, which is around 35 minutes drive north of Inverness. The name translates from the local Gaelic as 'big meadow' and the water used in production is taken from the nearby Loch Morie. This flows the 10 miles from the loch to the distillery via the River Averon.
