Review / Wire Works Necessary Evil Finish

This new whisky is the latest limited edition release from the English single malt whisky brand of Wire Works. The Wire Works Necessary Evil Finish is just the fifth release from the Derbyshire-based White Peak distillery. The whisky has seen the distillery's lightly peated spirit initially matured in ex-bourbon barrels. This has then been finished for a short period in ex-beer casks. These had previously held Necessary Evil imperial stout brewed by the neighbouring Thornbridge Brewery. It is bottled at 51.3% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. There are just 2,059 individually numbered bottles.

Distillery Visit - Balcones

The Balcones distillery was ahead of its time and helped to kick off the craft distilling boom in the United States. They have also helped to put American single malt and Texan whisky on the map. Now the distillery is celebrating its 10th anniversary and Matt was invited over for a special tour.

________

It seems difficult to imagine the spirits scene without any small artisanal distillers. However, this current landscape is very different to that of a decade ago when we first began writing Whisky For Everyone. The American whiskey sector was dominated by a limited number of major players and in our UK market there seemed little choice.

Have just tried - Balcones whisky

Balcones is an American distillery that is gaining plenty of recognition and attention at the moment.  It is based in Waco, Texas and was built by hand by founder Chip Tate with the help of his two other distillers.  Since the first product was launched in 2009, the distillery has racked up over 25 national and international awards for their whiskies including the prestigious Whisky Magazine Icons of Whisky - Craft Distiller of the Year award in 2012.
