Whisky Tourism - The Impact On A Scottish Island.

* This article originally appeared on the Huffington Post UK on 13/7/17.

Whisky tourism is nothing new to Islay. It is home to eight distilleries that are known the world over and is relatively accessible for a Hebridean island. A two-hour ferry ride from the mainland or a short 30-minute hop from Glasgow by plane gets you there. But how does the island cope during the annual Feis Ile, a week that celebrates the island’s music, heritage and single malts?

Many malt fans see Islay as the ‘Mecca of whisky’ with large numbers visiting on their own personal pilgrimage. However, Feis Ile takes things to a very different level. Islay’s population of just over 3,000 almost trebles for a week as the whisky pilgrims flock there from all four corners of the globe to join the festivities. How does an island’s infrastructure cope with such a sudden influx?

The Epicurean - October 28 & 29

We are delighted to announce that we are to be one of the official media partners of The Epicurean, a forthcoming and new food and drinks festival to be held in London.  This will see us working alongside esteemed publications such as Difford's Guide, Foodism, Hot Rum Cow and The World of Fine Wine during the event.

The Epicurean is a collection of over 100 UK artisan and craft producers of food, wine, beer and spirits and will see over 1,000 products available for the public to sample.  The festival will be held on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 October - there is one session on Friday (6-10.30pm) and two on Saturday (12.30-5.30pm and 6-10.30pm).

The location for The Epicurean is the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane, a regenerated site in Shoreditch that is a hub for artists, creatives, independent retailers and bespoke eateries.  Tickets are priced at £25 for each session and this includes a free gin and tonic on entry, a festival bag (including an event catalogue and a few other goodies) and the opportunity to sample everything in the show.

To book your tickets - please visit www.epicurean.online.

You can also follow The Epicurean on Facebook and Twitter (@epicureanLDN) or by using #TheEpicurean on both.
