Inbox - The Week's Whisky News (October 11, 2019)

Welcome to Inbox, our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our WFE email. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday.

Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.  This is the news that has grabbed our attention this week.

________

Ardbeg
The Islay distillery of Ardbeg have announced a brief return for one of their most popular recent limited editions - the Ardbeg Supernova. The expression, which is the peatiest released by the brand and has even been sent in to space as part of an experiment, was first released in 2009 and this is bottled to commemorate that 10th anniversary.

As with the previous incarnations this has been created by Dr. Bill Lumsden - the Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks at Ardbeg. The Supernova 2019 Edition is bottled at 53.8% ABV and is available only to members of the Ardbeg Committee via www.ardbeg.com. The number of bottles has not been revealed but each will cost £140.

"The incredible peat explosion in Supernova probably explains why these bottlings have been so popular with the Ardbeg Committee over the years. Supernova 2019 is the fifth edition in the series and I’m sure it will be snatched up in no time at all."
Micky Heads - Distillery Manager at Ardbeg.

Booker's
The premium bourbon brand of Booker's, named after industry legend Booker Noe, has announced the third release of this year's batches - the Booker Bourbon Batch 2019-03. As with all the previous releases, it carries a subtitle which in this case is 'The Country Ham'. This pays homage to Booker's family tradition of smoking hams, which was started by his grandfather Jim Beam. Batch 2019-03 has an age of six years, four months and two days and is bottled at 124.7 Proof (62.3% ABV). It will be available throughout the USA and will retail for $80 a bottle.

Glenallachie

The Glenallachie distillery has announced that Batch 3 of its 10 years old Cask Strength (pictured, centre) is now available, alongside five new single casks bottlings that will be exclusive for the UK market. The releases coincide with the two year anniversary of Billy Walker buying the Speyside distillery.

The 10 years old Cask Strength has been created using a combination of first and second-fill ex-bourbon casks along with ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheons, ex-Oloroso sherry hogsheads and virgin oak casks. There are just 6,000 bottles and these are released at 48% ABV. The new whisky will only be available at the distillery shop in Muir of Ord. Each bottle carries the signature of Daniel Cant, the Distillery Manager at Glen Ord, and will cost £90.

Kininvie

The Speyside distillery of Kininvie has revealed three new whiskies - the Kininvie Works range. One is a triple distilled single malt, one is a single grain whisky and one is a blend. All liquids involved have been distilled at Kininvie. The range has been created to 'be free thing and allow invention, learning and discovery to lead the way'.

KVSM001 is a triple distilled single malt, which is only made at the distillery for one week every year, and is bottled at five years of age. It has been matured in ex-bourbon casks and is released at 47% ABV.

KVSG002 is a single grain and part of an experiment to see what happens if malted rye is added to the mash. It is bottled at three years of age and 47.8% ABV. It has been matured in virgin American oak casks.

KVSB003 is a blend of three years old single grain whisky made at Kininvie combined with Kininvie's double distilled single malt, aged in virgin American oak and European oak casks respectively. It is bottled at 48.2% ABV.

The three bottlings will initially be available in the UK and France, and have been produced from 100% recyclable materials and with e-commerce in mind - the bottles are slim and the packaging does not require any further bubble wrap. Each of the Kininvie Works will cost £35 for a 35cl bottle.
