Inbox / The Week's Whisky News (March 11, 2022)

Welcome to Inbox, our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our WFE email. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday. Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.

Here is the round-up of the news from this last week ...

Benriach

The innovative Speyside distillery of Benriach have announced details of their latest single cask batch. The Benriach Cask Edition Colelction 2022 features nine bottlings, each from a single cask and hand-selected by Dr. Rachel Barrie, the Master Blender for Benriach. The whiskies range between 12 and 27 years of age, and are all bottled at their natural strength. They are also non chill-filtered and of natural colour. Each bottling will only be available in a selected market. Prices range from £103 to £531. A full list of cask details are below.

"Each individual Benriach cask tells its own story of classic or peated spirit matured in specially selected oak over years and through seasons : a journey of flavour captured at a unique moment in time, never to be repeated in quite the same way again."
Dr. Rachel Barrie.

Cotswolds
The English distillery of Cotswolds has announced a new limited edition single malt - the Cotswolds Madeira Single Cask. It is the first release in their Single Cask Series planned for 2022. The whisky was made using locally grown and malted barley, and was filled to the single French oak cask that had previously held Madeira wine in April 2016. It was bottled in February 2022 at the natural strength of 59.5% ABV, and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. The Cotswold Madeira Single Cask is a distillery exclusive - it is only available from the distillery shop or Cotswolds website. A bottle will cost £95.

Method & Madness

The experimental Method & Madness series from Irish Distillers has revealed three new expressions that have been inspired by Japan - the Method & Madness Japanese Cedarwood Cask, Japanese Chestnut Cask and Japanese Mizunara Oak Cask. The limited edition trilogy has been created by a combination of apprentice distillers and blenders, and senior blenders at the Midleton Micro Distillery in Co. Cork.

The Japanese Cedarwood Cask and Japanese Chestnut Cask both feature single pot still whiskeys that were first matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry barrels. These were then transferred to casks made of cedarwood and chestnut respectively. Both were sourced from the south of Japan and represent represent first for the Irish whisky category. Both whiskeys are bottled at 48% ABV and will cost €95 / £80 each.

The Japanese Mizunara Oak Cask heads the trilogy and is bottled at 33 years of age. The single pot still whiskey was distilled and filled to ex-bourbon barrels in 1988, before being transferred to mizunara oak casks for a three year finishing period in 2018. This oak was sourced from the Hokkaido region in the north of Japan. There are just 252 bottles of this rare whiskey and they are released at 52.8% ABV. A bottle will cost €3,000 / £2,525.
