Our Top 10 Whiskies of 2020

Another year has passed and it is time for one of our favourite blog posts - our top 10 whiskies from last year. Everyone will have a different opinion about what should and should not be on such a list. Our list is simply our favourites with no agenda or criteria, other than the whisky had to be released in 2020. 

2020 was a year like no other in our lifetimes. The effects of Covid-19 have impacted all facets of daily life and beyond. It has had huge implications for the whisky industry around the world too. But after a short hiatus in March and April, companies began to carry on with adapted plans and release new bottlings. Launch events, tastings and even whisky shows turned to the online format and have now become commonplace.

Allotment Drams - Label 5 Bourbon Barrel & Benriach Curiositas 10 years old

We catch up with Matt as he visits the allotment and samples the recently released Label 5 Bourbon Barrel, a single grain whisky from the well known blended Scotch brand. Watch as he talks about the brand, the distillery where it is produced and the award that it has already won. Then he gives his thoughts and tasting notes.

On his next visit, Matt chooses a pioneering Speyside single malt - the Benriach Curiositas 10 years old. Watch to find out why it is so pioneering and what the differences are between the Highland peat that they use at Benriach compared to the more well known Islay style of peat, before giving his thoughts and tasting notes.

Review - Label 5 Gold Heritage

This is the newest addition to the core range of the popular Label 5 blended Scotch whisky brand.  The Gold Heritage is designed to be a premium blend and has been created by Graham Coull, the Master Blender for Label 5.  It includes a complex mix of whiskies including single malts up to the age of 20 years old.  The Label 5 brand is owned by French drinks company La Martiniquaise. They also own the Glen Moray single malt distillery, which is located in Elgin in the Speyside region of Scotland.

Have just tried - Label 5 'Classic Black'

The Label 5 is a blended Scotch whisky brand, which is owned by French company La Martiniquaise. It is one of the biggest selling Scotch brands in the world - according to figures in the latest Malt Whisky Yearbook 2014* it was in 10th position for total sales, after shifting an impressive 28 million bottles last year.  It has also picked numerous major awards, including a prestigious gold medal at this year's San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
