Review | A Good Old-Fashioned Christmas Whisky (2023 Edition)

Each November, the renowned spirits retailer The Whisky Exchange releases a special single malt for the forthcoming festive period - A Good Old-Fashioned Christmas Whisky. The annual release tends to lean towards rich, bold ex-sherry cask characteristics and the 2023 Edition is no different. The whisky is a 15 years old single malt from an unnamed Speyside distillery and has been entirely matured in ex-sherry casks sourced from Spain. These are both first-fill and re-fill, which were then married together.

Review / A Fine Christmas Malt 2020 Edition

A Fine Christmas Malt is the annual festive limited edition bottling from leading specialist spirits retailer The Whisky Exchange. Each year the whisky goes in a different direction and the 2020 Edition is a blended malt that features single malts with a heavy influence of ex-sherry cask maturation. There are just 1,918 bottles and these are only available from The Whisky Exchange website or three stores in London. Bottles can also be engraved with a personal message. A Fine Christmas Malt 2020 Edition is released at 44.5% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. The price is £74.95 per bottle.

Review - A Fine Christmas Malt 2019 Edition

A Fine Christmas Malt is the annual festive limited edition bottling from leading specialist spirits retailer The Whisky Exchange. The 2019 Edition is a 10 years old single malt that was distilled at the Speyside distillery of Linkwood on the outskirts of Elgin. The whisky has been matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks and there are just 2,696 bottles of this year's release. These have been released at 54.2% ABV and the whisky is non chill-filtered and of natural colour. A Fine Christmas Malt 2019 Edition is exclusively available now from The Whisky Exchange. A bottle will cost £56.95.

Review - Port Askaig 34 years old

This whisky is a new single cask single malt released by Elixir Distillers under their popular and award-winning Port Askaig name. The cask in question is an American oak ex-bourbon hogshead. While the distillery remains un-named, clues to its origin are given in the press release - the whisky was produced at Islay's largest distillery, which is situated just to the north of the village of Port Askaig. It was also distilled and filled to the single cask in 1983, and has been bottled at 34 years of age.

Review - 'A Fine Christmas Malt' by The Whisky Exchange

This whisky is a special Christmas release from leading spirits retailer The Whisky Exchange. It is their first ever Christmas Malt and is a 17 years old single malt whisky. This has been matured in ex-oloroso sherry butts to 'create a whisky packed with festive flavours' and has been sourced from an un-named Speyside, which is famous for its use of such casks.

Black Friday has been and gone for another year. As always, whisky retailers were inevitably involved and saw companies tripping over each other to give their customers the best 'deals'. Some of the painfully low prices must have had the Master Blenders and Distillers around the industry crying in a dark corner of their blending labs and wondering why they had bothered working so hard. However, one retailer took a different approach.  The annual Black Friday bottling from leading UK spirits retailer The Whisky Exchange has quickly become a fixture in the pre-Christmas feeding frenzy.

Review - Kilchoman 2007 10 years old Single Sherry Cask

This new single cask bottling from the small independent Islay distillery of Kilchoman is the third to be released by leading retailer The Whisky Exchange. The cask in question is Cask #401, which was a first-fill ex-Oloroso sherry butt and has yielded just 599 bottles. It was selected by a team from The Whisky Exchange and it was filled with new spirit on 14 November 2007. Bottling took place just over 10 years later on 24 November 2017 and it is one of the oldest Kilchoman's to have been released to date.The single cask is bottled at the natural cask strength of 58.5% ABV and is of natural colour and non chill-filtered. Each will cost £125.

Review - Kavalan Peaty Cask

This peaty version from the Taiwanese distillery of Kavalan has been bottled especially for UK specialist retailer The Whisky Exchange. It was previously only available at the distillery but a few single casks were made available to whisky retailers around the world. With no natural peat in Taiwan, the flavour has been created by maturing in casks that have previously held smoky Islay single malts. Cask #029 for The Whisky Exchange has yielded just 104 bottles. Each has a natural cask strength of 52.4% ABV and costs £150. It is available to purchase here via the TWE website or at their London store in Covent Garden.

Review - Lagavulin 1991

This new whisky is the third and final limited edition released to commemorate Lagavulin's 200th anniversary in 2016.  The whisky was officially announced on December 31st to round off a year of celebrations for the Islay distillery.  This release is the rarest of the three and consists of just one ex-Oloroso sherry cask.  This cask was chosen during 2016 by a select group of people including Ivan Menezes, the CEO of Diageo, Georgie Crawford, the Distillery Manager of Lagavulin, and Iain McArthur, a veteran of over 45 years in the whisky industry and Lagavulin legend.

Review - Redbreast Single Cask

This new whiskey from Redbreast is the first ever single barrel expression to be released by the award-winning Irish brand. Cask number 30087 is an ex-Oloroso sherry butt that was filled at Midleton in 1999 and the cask has yielded just 576 bottles. It was selected by Billy Leighton, Head Blender at Midleton, and staff of retailer The Whisky Exchange and will be on sale exclusively through them.  Redbreast is a single pot still whiskey, which means that both malted and unmalted barley are used as ingredients and distilled in copper pot stills.  This style of whiskey was revered in the 18th and 19th centuries.  They aided the global rise in popularity of Irish whiskey and are now making a pronounced comeback.
