Inbox / The Week's Whisky News (January 22, 2021)

Welcome to Inbox, our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our WFE email. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday. Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.

This is our second Inbox of 2021 and although the year has started on the same bad note that 2020 finished on, we hope it will be a better one overall. Anyway, it's still a bit slow so here is the news from this week as the whisky industry begins to wake up from its New Year slumber ...

________

Ballantine's
The popular blended whisky brand of Ballantine's has entered the ever-expanding no/low alcohol category with a new expression. Ballantine's Light is a 20% ABV spirit drink with Ballantine's signature flavours at its core but with half the alcohol of Ballantine's Finest, the brand's largest selling Scotch whisky. It has been designed by Sandy Hyslop, the Master Blender for Ballantine's, to cater for a wider audience of drinkers and provide choice in the market place for their tastes and drinking occassion. Ballantine's Light will launch initially exclusively in Spain and is bottled at 20% ABV. It will cost €12.45 (£11) per bottle.

Gordon & MacPhail

The family owned independent bottler of Gordon & MacPhail has announced the bottling of one of its oldest ever single malts - the Glen Grant 72 years old. The whisky was distilled at the Speyside distillery in 1948 and has been maturing in an American oak ex-sherry cask in Gordon & MacPhail's Elgin warehouse ever since. The whisky is presented in a bespoke decanter created by Dartington Crystal and a presentation casket made of American black walnut.

There are just 290 decanters available and these are released at the natural cask strength, which is a staggering 56.2% ABV after 72 years. The Gordon & MacPhail Glen Grant 72 years old will be available in selected luxury whisky retailers worldwide and will cost £28,200/ $38,700 US each. Bottle number 88 will also be auctioned at Bonham's in Hong Kong on January 29.
