Here are this week's nuggets of news ...Amrut > New Portonova released
The innovative Indian distillery of Amrut have announced the release of their latest limited edition single malt whisky. The Amrut Portonova was first matured in new American oak and ex-Bourbon barrels and then transferred to Port casks from one of the most famous (although un-named) Port houses in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal for a further one year maturation period. It was then back to ex-Bourbon barrels for finishing, Each stage of the maturation took place at the distillery warehouses in Bangalore. The Portonova has been bottled at a natural cask strength of 61.2% ABV and this limited edition consists of just 1250 bottles worldwide. These have been split roughly in to thirds and will be sold in specialist retailers in the European, UK and USA markets for around €85, £75 or $115 respectively.
Duncan Taylor > Enters new Dimensions
The award winning independent bottler Duncan Taylor have announced the launch of The Dimensions Collection - an range of single malt and single grain Scotch whiskies that showcase some of their best casks. The collection showcases the multi dimensional levels of character and flavour available from individual distilleries and casks. The Dimensions collection consists of two versions of bottling - single cask, cask strength releases and exclusively numbered small batches at 46% ABV. The Dimensions Collection is now available in specialist whisky retailers.
The initial release includes an Aberlour 1993, Bunnhabhain 1988, Cameronbridge 1978, Clynelish 1995, Glenlivet 1981, Glen Moray 1988, Glenrothes 1992, Macduff 1997, Mortlach 1989 and Royal Brackla 1997. For further information on The Dimensions Collection and the full range of Duncan Taylor whiskies, visit www.duncantaylor.com.
Spirit of Unity > Raises cash for Japan
Earlier in the year, we reported on a unique whisky that was created by a group of seven independent Scottish distilleries. Each of the seven – Arran, Benriach, Bladnoch, Glendronach, Glengyle, Kilchoman and Springbank – donated a single cask of single malt, which were blended together to create a limited edition whisky named Spirit of Unity. The project was created to raise vital funds for relief efforts following the devastating natural disaster in Japan in March. The 2,000 bottles have now been sold and have raised a staggering £95,000 for various charities. Just a few remain, which are to be presented in limited box sets containing bottles signed by each of the seven Master Distillers. These will be auctioned in early 2012 to raise further funds.
Talisker > New packaging launched
The iconic single malt from the isle of Skye has revealed a full revamp of its packaging which will be released to all markets in early 2012. The new packaging will be rolled out over the entire range. The outer cartons feature powerful maritime photography and coastal scenes, taken by photographers Cailean Maclean (a Skye resident) and Angus Bremner, and a more prominent map of the island and distillery location. The bottle label features a bolder Talisker font and more prominence is placed on the Established 1830 message.Talisker's Distillery Manager Mark Lochhead is enthusiastic about the new designs, saying “Talisker is made by the sea in every sense of the word. To have this captured in these new designs is exciting for everyone here. At the same time it both speaks to our own roots and helps consumers understand what kind of place Skye is".

Laphroaig > 'Live' from Australia
This year's Laphroaig Live event is taking place next week and the location is Sydney, Australia. The event was first held in 2007 and the idea was to engage whisky fans around the world by holding a live tasting online. This year's show, the first to be held in the southern hemisphere, will incorporate Laphroaig whisky tasting, food and music - don't be surprised to see something to do with a traditional Aussie barbeque! Laphroaig is currently the third biggest selling single malt in Australia and the live broadcast will be hosted by Aussie TV presenter Simon Reeve, Laphroaig Distillery Manager John Campbell, Laphroaig's Master Blender Robert Hicks and Lin Johnston, the great great great granddaughter of the distillery's founder Alexander Johnston. He started Laphroaig in 1815. The whiskies to be sampled and discussed will be Quarter Cask and Triple Wood releases, plus a special 10 year old which was bottled in the 1960s. If it is as good as previous Laphroaig Live events, then we are in for a treat. It will take place at 8pm Sydney time on Thursday 6 October.
We are delighted to announce that we will be streaming this year's Laphroaig Live, with permission, here on Whisky For Everyone. Please join us on our special blog post next Thursday to watch the action live from Australia.

Amrut > New bottling announced
The award-winning and increasingly popular Amrut distillery, located in the Indian city of Bangalore, have announced the release of their latest whisky. In an unusual move they have distilled the spirit in Bangalore and then shipped it across to Germany for maturation. Here, it matured slower than in Bangalore (which is at an altitude of 3,000 feet/915 metres and has high humidity). the whisky has been matured on the remote unspoilt northern island of Helgoland, whose air benefits from no pollution and sitting on the Gulf Stream. The maturation and bottling have been done in conjunction with Prineus, Amrut's German importer. Details of the strength, estimated price or amount of bottles were not supplied. For further info about Amrut, visit www.amrutwhisky.co.uk.Auchentoshan > Switch initiative announced
The Lowland distillery of Auchentoshan have announced a new initiative - The Auchentoshan Switch. The Switch is a competition for mixologists on both sides of the Atlantic and involves the winners getting the opportunity to work in two top bars - one lucky winner from the UK will work in Apotheke in New York and another winner from the US will work at 69 Colebrooke Row in London. The competition is centred around Auchentoshan's Three Wood expression and to enter you have to create a short video of you creating two drinks - the first is a lemonade from scratch using raw ingredients and the second is an Old Fashioned using the Three Wood. The period of entry is between 1 July and 31 August. Go to www,switch.auchentoshan.com to enter and for more details about the competition, the two bars and Auchentoshan. Below is a short video that they have released to get you inspired!
Balvenie > Masters of Craft
Last month, we reported on the inaugural Masters of Craft competition which was hosted by Balvenie, the famous Speyside distillery owned by William Grant & Sons. The initiative celebrates the often-forgotten crafts and trades that many people pursue. Such craftsmanship is deep rooted in everything that Balvenie does and they believe that this aids the quality of their whiskies. The awards were given across a range of skills and materials - the judging panel was made up of Balvenie’s legendary Malt Master Dave Stewart, TV presenter and designer Kevin McCloud, photographer Nick Hand, Robin Wood, the chairman of the Heritage Crafts Association and Anne Cuthbertson, the editor of the Sunday Telegraph Life magazine. Now they have released a short video of the awards night at the swanky Connaught Hotel in central London, to which we were delighted to have been invited. The Balvenie Masters of Craft from The Balvenie on Vimeo.
Bowmore > Charity whisky tasting
The famous Islay distillery has teamed up with Rob Allanson, editor of Whisky Magazine, to host a special whisky tasting in Glasgow on Friday 15th July in aid of the Bowmore Ben Nevis Challenge - an event of 20 August where Bowmore support the charity Capability Scotland, which sees disabled and non-disabled people working together to take on climbing the UK's highest mountain. The tasting will include some unique limited edition whiskies from Auchentoshan and Bowmore, plus a few other special drams. It will be followed by a raffle and silent auction featuring some rare whiskies signed by Bowmore distillery manager Eddie MacAffer. The Bowmore Ben Nevis Charity Whisky Tasting will take place at the Thistle Hotel in Cambridge Street, Glasgow and tickets are £30 per head. Click here to buy tickets and visit www.bowmore.com/ben-nevis for info on the Bowmore Ben Nevis Challenge.
Macallan > Visitor Centre given 5 star award
The visitor centre at the famous Speyside distillery has been awarded the prestigious five star rating from VisitScotland’s quality assurance scheme. Following the completion of an investment programme of over £1m, The Macallan Visitor Centre offers a highly innovative and distinctive distillery experience. A memorable and interactive learning journey takes visitors through the production life-cycle of The Macallan. There are two types of tour - The Experience Tour (£10) is lead by The Macallan's knowledgeable guides, ending with a dram of The Macallan. The Precious Tour (£20) is more in-depth ending with a tutored nosing and tasting of some of The Macallan’s older whiskies. The annual review by VisitScotland consists of unannounced visits by an auditor who assesses core areas covering all aspects which have an impact on a customer's visit.

Have just tried ... Amrut peated
Amrut is a distillery in India. It is located in Bangalore in the south west of the country and was originally established in 1948, although whisky production didn't begin until the mid 1980s. The Indian market is one of the biggest and fastest growing in the world for consumption of whisky. However, most 'whisky' is made from various local ingredients (crucially not barley or other grains) and can therefore not be technically classed as whisky. Also the standard can be very poor. At Amrut they do use malted barley, which is grown and malted in other parts of India. They use water from a well that is located 15 miles from the distillery and then distillation and maturation takes place in Bangalore. Here, the temperature and humidity are high so the whisky matures much faster than in Scotland or Ireland. As a result of this the spirit evaporates much quicker (this evaporation is called the 'angel's share') and maturation for anything above four years is difficult. Amrut are the first Indian distillery to seriously export to the UK and Europe and this one is a peated version (the peat is actually flown over from Scotland as they don't have any in India!). It is bottled at cask strength with a very high alcohol level of 61.9% ABV.The nose initially blasts you with peat smoke but underneath is sweet and rich with lots of dried fruit, nuts and marzipan (imagine a Christmas fruit cake). There is also something that is not natural in there that reminded me of custard powder or fake vanilla essence. This is full bodied on the palate and just blows your mouth away (mine actually went numb!). The burn from the high alcohol level just obliterates everything else so I added some water. This revealed some quite sweet and dried fruit notes (think of raisins and dried apples and pears) but it was very dry and woody. I added some more water (almost twice as much water to whisky by this point) and it opened out well and revealed a lovely soft creamy sweetness that balanced much better with the peat smoke. It was still very dry though. This is a very interesting whisky if you get passed the initial aggressiveness in your mouth. It needs a lot of water but after adding this, it really is pretty good. Amrut peated retails for £40 and is a limited release in the UK.
