That Boutique-y Whisky Company
That Boutique-y Whisky Company is a new(ish) independent bottling venture from the innovative online retailer Master of Malt. The first batch of four whiskies were released back in September 2012, with two further batches following since. The concept behind the bottlings is to release a set of bespoke whiskies without age statements and the restrictions of being a single cask. Each whisky is constructed from a selection of casks and then bottled at whatever the natural cask strength is. The 50cl bottles also feature a series of eye-catching cult comic book style labels which feature people from around the whisky world or stories connected to the featured distillery.

Ardbeg - Galileo is about to arrive
The award winning Islay distillery has announced the forthcoming release of a new expression. A new Ardbeg is always one of the most highly anticipated new releases in the 'whisky calendar' and the Galileo (named after the famous astronomer) is no different. As ever, it is expected to sell out very quickly, with some retailers reporting that their pre-ordered stock has already been allocated to customers.
The whisky used in the Ardbeg Galileo was distilled in 1999 and it was bottled recently at 13 years of age. The final whisky is a mix of casks, combining first fill ex-bourbon casks with some ex-Marsala casks from Sicily. It has been bottled at 49% ABV, is non chill-filtered and will retail around the £70 mark. It should be available from September 1 in the UK, Europe and selected Asian markets. There will also be plenty of supporting activity for the launch on the Ardbeg website and a special Galileo Facebook page - keep any eye on these for further details.
Benriach - CaskStrength & Carry On
Our fellow London whisky bloggers and good friends Neil and Joel of CaskStrength have announced their second single malt release. Their aim is to work through the alphabet and release series of whiskies with one distillery from each letter. Roughly this time last year, they released a very limited Arran and now they have moved on to Benriach for the second bottling.
They have selected a single cask which was distilled at Benriach in 1996 and was initially filled to an ex-bourbon hogshead. In 2008 it was transferred to an ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry cask and it has spent the last four year maturing in that. There are just 296 bottles and it has been bottled at the natural cask strength of 55.2% ABV. The bottling is being sold via online retailer Master of Malt for a price of £54.95. Rumour has it that it is selling fast, so if you fancy a bottle then don't hang around - click here to buy.
Famous Grouse - Record breakers
The popular blended whisky has broken the world record for the largest bottle of whisky. The 228 litre bottle of The Famous Grouse was filled in front of Guinness World Record adjudicator Jack Brockbank and an assembled crowd of VIPs and fans at The Famous Grouse Experience on 12 August. The Experience is located at the Glenturret distillery in the Highlands and has been celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
The record beats that previously held by Jack Daniels of 184 litres. The Famous Grouse record breaking bottle holds a staggering 9,120 pub measures of whisky and took three hours to fill. The hand blown bottle (pictured, above) was made by Czech glass manufacturer Bomma and stands an impressive 1.75 metres tall. The bottle will stay at the distillery and be on permanent display to those visiting The Famous Grouse Experience.

Benriach - First brand ambassador
We were delighted to hear the new this week that the Benriach Distillery Company have appointed Stewart Buchanan as their first ever brand ambassador. The independent company owns Benriach and Glendronach distilleries and Stewart will be covering both brands. Stewart was formerly the distillery manager at Benriach and we met him a couple of years ago there - he is one of the nicest 'whisky people' that we have met to date. Congratulations to Stewart.

A few weeks ago, we told you about the new Islay Taste Map which had been launched by Bowmore, the oldest distillery on the famous whisky island. Well, an interactive version of the map is now available online and can be accessed via www.islaytastemap.com. The map is a bold move to support the Islay category as a whole, and is the ideal guide to the complex and varied characters of Islay’s eight distilleries. It has been launched as an educational tool for both the on-trade and off-trade. Check it out and have a go.
Cooley > New range of PoitÃn launched
The award winning independent distillery of Cooley has launched their version of a historical Irish classic spirit - poitÃn (pronounced po-cheen). This legendary clear spirit, famous for its high alcohol strength and potency, was first produced in Ireland over 1,000 years ago, way before the whiskey industry took over. This Cooley version is made using malted and un-malted barley and is distilled in a traditional copper pot still. It is then bottled straight from the still, with no maturation, at a strength of 65% ABV.
The poitÃn is recommended to be used in the same way as any other quality white spirit - neat, with water or ice, or with mixers or as part of a cocktail. The Cooley PoitÃn will initially consist of just 1,800 bottles which will be available within Ireland at The Celtic Whiskey Shop and in Dublin Airport and then in selected specialist alcohol retailers elsewhere.

The images are by renowned photographer John Ross, who has created numerous well known album covers.
It will be seen in the UK, Chile and Greece before Christmas and then rolled out elsewhere around the globe during 2012. We have already seen the strikingly graphic posters on the London Underground and have even seen one of the famous London black cabs decked out in the zig zag design!

The discount supermarket chain Aldi have announced two UK exclusive additions to their single malt whisky range. And they are sure to raise a few eyebrows! The first is a 40 year old single malt and makes Aldi the first supermarket to offer such an 'own brand' product. Named GlenBridge 40, the whisky is from a "famous Speyside distillery" according to the Aldi PR team and has been aged in European oak ex-sherry casks. There are 3,000 bottles which will go on sale in Aldi's 450 UK stores on 8 December for the staggeringly low price of £49.99. In addition, there is the Glen Marnoch 24 years old which will sell for just £24.99. Details of this are a little sketchy but our friends over at CaskStrength have reviewed both, with tasting notes - click here to read.
Bowmore > Team up with Savile Row tailor
The iconic Islay single malt of Bowmore has joined forces with a leading Savile Row tailor to offer 'the ultimate Christmas gift for the whisky loving gentleman'. Glengoyne > Free entry for St. Andrew's Day
The Glengoyne distillery, which is located just 30 minutes drive north of Glasgow, is opening its doors for free over this coming weekend. This is to celebrate St. Andrew's Day, which is Scotland's national day and is on 30 November. Entry will be free on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th and the distillery is open from 10am-5pm (the last tour is at 4pm). The tour (usual price £6.75) includes a short film about the history of the distillery and Glengoyne brand, a guided visit around the distillery and a dram of their 10 year old single malt at the end. For directions to Glengoyne and for further details of the event, please visit www.glengoyne.com.
Master Of Malt > Blend your own whisky
Innovative online retailer Master Of Malt have created an interactive new product which allows you to make your own whisky. The Home Blending Kit comes with a selection of 3cl sample miniatures, which contain a variety of grain and single malt whiskies, and some measuring equipment.
The idea is that you can then construct your own blended whisky to your own personal taste. The process is similar to The Blogger's Blend that we took part in earlier this year (the final product for this will be released shortly). For a full list of the samples and equipment and to order your own kit (priced £49.95) - click here. There is then another page where you fill in the quantities of each sample in your 'final blend' and the cost is calculated - that can be viewed by clicking here. Good luck, it's plenty of fun.

Have just tried > Glenfarclas 'Movember 2011'
It’s getting towards the end of November and you may have seen increasing numbers of people sporting dodgy facial hair around your town or city - we certainly have in London! So far, we have seen a decent variety of moustaches - our personal favourites to date include 'The Porn Star', 'The Charlie Chaplin', 'The Squadron Leader' and 'The YMCA Village People Special'. Some look better than others, but what is it all about? What has caused this spate of boycotting the razor?
The reason is a charity group called Movember, which was started in Australia a number of years ago. Movember aims to raise awareness and money for a series of male health issues, primarily The Prostate Cancer Charity and testicular cancer charities, and raises money during November through people growing moustaches (or a 'mo' - get it?) for the whole month. For further details or to donate to Movember, then check out www.movember.com.
Part of this large charity organisation is a UK division named Whisky For Movember. The group is made up of people from across the whisky industry - writers, bloggers, retailers and drinkers and they grow a variety of facial hair for the cause. For more details, updates on this year's moustaches or to donate, please visit the official website or follow them on Twitter. We are sure that the participant's girlfriends, wives, kids and pets will all be relieved when the 1st of December arrives and these fashion abominations get shaved off, but it is all for a great cause.
Each year there is a special whisky bottled for Whisky For Movember. This year's offering sees the Speyside distillery of Glenfarclas team up with online retailer Master of Malt. The single malt was distilled in September 2002 and has been bottled at nine years of age. It has been made from just two ex-Oloroso sherry casks and has been bottled at the cask strength of 53% ABV. Each bottle will cost £39.95 and can be purchased from the Master of Malt website. £10 from each sale will be donated to Movember.
Glenfarclas is a distillery located in the Speyside region, close to the small town of Ballindalloch. It is owned by J&G Grant and is the second oldest family owned distillery in Scotland - the Grant’s have owned it since 1865 and are currently on their 7th generation of whisky makers. The distillery was founded in 1836 and was originally named Rechlerich. The name was changed to Glenfarclas when the distillery was completely rebuilt by the Grant family in 1896. Glenfarclas translates as ‘the valley of green grass’ from Gaelic. The distillery has an annual production capacity of three million litres and boasts the largest stills in Speyside.
Our tasting notes
The colour of this special Movember 2011 bottling is dark amber, almost brown. The nose is clean and rich, sweet and deliciously heavy. There are obvious initial aromas of caramel, spiced orange and crumbly brown sugar. Underneath, other aromas begin to come through - think of milk chocolate, espresso coffee, baking spices (cinnamon and nutmeg), almonds, treacle and vanilla. On the palate, this is again rich and sweet and feels very velvety, almost treacly. It sticks to your taste buds and has a sumptuous warming spiciness. The obvious caramel and spiced orange notes are joined by raisins, dried apple, toasted almonds and hints of chocolate and coffee. Some drying wood spices develop with time (think of cinnamon and nutmeg again, plus oak) and these carry through to the finish. There is also a bit of heat from the cask strength ABV and this manifests itself as a white peppery note. The finish is again intense and becomes increasing dry and tannic, gripping to your taste buds and not wanting to let go. Plenty of barley comes through with delicious treacly caramel notes adding balance and sweetness.
What's the verdict?
This is a delicious whisky but one that packs a punch. The 53% ABV gives great intensity which can be lacking in the regular core range of Glenfarclas - it reminds us a little more of the 105 bottling, which is the cask strength offering from this range. It is also good with the addition of water, which bring out the brown sugar and orange zesty elements in particular. This whisky offers great value for money at £39.95, especially when considering that £10 goes to the Movember charity. You still have time to purchase a bottle if you wish but they don't have many bottles left, so hurry!

Laphroaig > 'Live' from Australia
This year's Laphroaig Live event is taking place next week and the location is Sydney, Australia. The event was first held in 2007 and the idea was to engage whisky fans around the world by holding a live tasting online. This year's show, the first to be held in the southern hemisphere, will incorporate Laphroaig whisky tasting, food and music - don't be surprised to see something to do with a traditional Aussie barbeque! Laphroaig is currently the third biggest selling single malt in Australia and the live broadcast will be hosted by Aussie TV presenter Simon Reeve, Laphroaig Distillery Manager John Campbell, Laphroaig's Master Blender Robert Hicks and Lin Johnston, the great great great granddaughter of the distillery's founder Alexander Johnston. He started Laphroaig in 1815. The whiskies to be sampled and discussed will be Quarter Cask and Triple Wood releases, plus a special 10 year old which was bottled in the 1960s. If it is as good as previous Laphroaig Live events, then we are in for a treat. It will take place at 8pm Sydney time on Thursday 6 October.
We are delighted to announce that we will be streaming this year's Laphroaig Live, with permission, here on Whisky For Everyone. Please join us on our special blog post next Thursday to watch the action live from Australia.

Buffalo Trace > Two new white whiskies launched
The bourbon distillery based in Frankfort, Kentucky have unveiled two new un-aged whiskies – White Dog Wheated Mash and White Dog Rye Mash. These join the existing White Dog Mash #1 (pictured, left) in their 'white whiskey' range. The whiskeys are bottled fresh from the stills at their natural strengths. Wheated Mash White Dog is distilled from corn, barley and wheat and is bottled at 114 proof. The Rye Mash White Dog is made from corn, barley, and rye grains. This is bottled at 125 proof. Kris Comstock, the Buffalo Trace Brand Manager, said “Hopefully bartenders and consumers will come up with some creative cocktails using the new Wheat and Rye versions. If nothing else, you can see how these whiskeys taste before and after barrel aging.” The three versions in Buffalo Trace's White Dog range will be available in 375ml bottles only, at a suggested retail price of $15.99 per bottle.
Master of Malt > New Dailuaine bottling announced
The innovative online retailer Master of Malt have just bottled a new single cask of Dailuaine. Bottlings of this little known Speyside distillery are rare and eagerly anticipated. It was distilled in 1983 and has been aged for 27 years in a single refill ex-sherry hogshead. The whisky is released at the natural cask strength of 53.6% ABV and will retail for £64.95. The Master of Malt tasting notes for this exclusive whisky are - the nose offers ginger, and oily, toasty malt, and on the palate there are notes of golden syrup, gingerbread, barley, vanilla and sweet oak, developing into a spicy, dessert wine-like finish. There are only 231 bottles and they can be purchased only from www.masterofmalt.com.
Suntory > New Japanese cocktails created
The multi award winning Japanese whisky giants, who own the Hakushu and Yamazaki distilleries and the Hibiki blended brands, have created two new whisky cocktails using their products. These are designed to help combat the oncoming Autumn months and have been created by Suntory Brand Ambassador Zoran Peric. The first is the Hibiki Hakuro (pictured, left) - made from 50ml Hibiki 17 Year Old, 50ml sugarcane juice, 2.5ml milk thistle - and this is made by pouring the ingredients over ice and stirring thoroughly, before serving in a highball glass and garnishing with a twist of orange zest. The second is the Hakushu Shuubun – made with 50ml Hakushu 12 Year Old single malt whisky, 20ml Yuzu juice, 20ml gomme syrup and an egg white - and this is made by shaking the ingredients thoroughly and pouring into a cocktail goblet, before garnishing with lemon twist.

The Master of Malt Blogger's Blend > Part 3
Master of Malt, the innovative online whisky and spirits retailer, have now created each of the 10 whisky blend recipes that they received from their selected bloggers and have packaged them up in a set (pictured, left). This set, which has been named The Blogger's Blend, contains one 3cl sample of each blend and each sample is numbered 1-10. There is also a booklet that explains about each of the participating blogs. This special set is now available from www.masterofmalt.com and more information can been found on the Master of Malt blog. The Blogger's Blend costs £29.95 plus postage. To read our previous posts about The Blogger's Blend - click here.We have enjoyed taking part to date and are proud of the blend that we have produced. However, the process doesn't purely revolove around sales ... within the set is also a voting form. Anyone that buys The Blogger's Blend set gets the chance to choose the winning blend from the 10 on offer. You simply pick your favourite, mark the corresponding number (1-10) on the form and send it back to Master of Malt or do the same on the voting page on their website! To remove any possible bias towards one blog or another, Master of Malt have not revealed which blog's whisky relates to which numbered sample. Voting closes soon, so if you haven't done so already - buy a set and get voting!!
Last night, we sat down with the 10 whiskies and worked our way through them - below are our tasting notes for each. We spent most of the time trying to guess which one was ours and who of our whisky friends made each of the other nine! As part of the voting, customers are asked to consider 'value for money, not just flavour', so we have included the predicted retail prices of a 70cl bottle of each blend.
Blend A > £47.95 a bottle
This has an initial sweet and quite sugary nose, with aromas of ripe banana, citrus peel and a whiff of distant peat smoke. The palate is soft and creamy with initial vanilla and sugary caramel notes. It becomes increasingly grainy and this carries through to a decently long finish, which also has the whiff of smokiness.
Blend B > £35.95
The nose is rich and sweet with a combination of cereal and toasted marshmallow aromas. This is initially very sugary and sweet on the palate with plenty of honey, toffee, tropical and dark dried fruit notes. The finish is much drier and slightly tannic with plenty of oak and wood spice character, which gives balance to the sweetness.
Blend C > £67.95
The most expensive blend by far offers a fresh, vibrant nose that is packed with subtle aromas - honey, gentle oak and wood spices, heather and ashy smokiness. On the palate, this whisky is much bolder than the nose suggests with a nice level of sweet notes combining with the woody, spicy, ashy ones. A long, delicate and well balanced finish.
Blend D > £39.95
A lovely and gentle nose with plenty of sweet caramel and toffee aromas, followed by dried fruit and a hint of distant smokiness. This is tangy on the palate and quite spirity although some delicious grassy, cereal notes come through, as does that hint of smoke. Very short finish. This smells great but the palate and finish are disappointing. Benefits from a drop of water.
Blend E > £42.95
This blend exhibits the biggest sherry cask influence of the set - the nose is packed with big caramel, dark dried fruit and distinct nutty (almond?) aromas, which makes you think of Christmas cake. The palate is rich yet soft with a lovely sweetness tempered by cereal grain and wood spice notes (especially cinnamon). A long, rich finish with a nice dryness adding balance.
Blend F > £36.95
A sweet, quite sugary nose that combines toffee, honey and green fruit (especially apple) aromas - this reminded us of toffee apples. On the palate, this is soft and gentle - initially very sweet with heavy cereals and a grassy note coming through later. This graininess increases and carries on it to the decently long finish.
Blend G > £39.95
A lovely fresh and vibrant nose which has plenty of fresh green fruit, cereal and dried grass aromas. The palate is soft and feels creamy with a pleasant combination of cereal grains, vanilla, dried grass/hay and a sugary toffee-like note right at the end. The finish is slightly short and sharp but has a pleasant woody, spicy warmth.
Blend H > £52.45
The nose has a good combination of aromas - vanilla, toffee, bittersweet cereals and hints of sultana and soft ashy smoke. The palate is creamy with plenty of notes vying for attention. These include barley grains, toffee, vanilla, baking spices (think of cinnamon and nutmeg) and a hint of background smoke. The finish has good balance and softness, being of decent length.
Blend I > £54.95
This is the smokiest of the bunch and hits you with a blast of surgical spirit and ashy, tar-like aromas. Underneath is a lovely light and delicate sweetness that hints at honey, icing sugar and cereals. On the palate, this is a mix of spicy, ashy smoke and earthy peat with the sweetness again coming through with time. A long, lingering and peppery finish. Delicious.
Blend J > £39.95
The darkest in colour of the whiskies, this has plenty of richness in the form of dried fruit, orange zest and caramel aromas on the nose. The palate is a little thinner than expected and not as rich as the nose but with a lovely combination of orange oil, chocolate, oak spice and dried fruit notes. The finish is very pleasant with more of the orange oil and wood spice.
We have now cast our votes and will await the results. It has to be said that many of the blends have numerous similar characteristics but each is subtly different. However, three or four blends really stand out. We will continue to report on the further stages of the process, which includes the selection of the winning blend plus the naming of the whisky and the designing of the label. If you buy The Blogger's Blend set, then let us know what you think and hope that you enjoy the 10 whiskies!

The Master of Malt Blending Challenge > Part 2
Recently, we were delighted to be asked to contribute to an exciting project by Master of Malt, the innovative independent bottling and online whisky retailing company. The project was to create a new blended whisky for the Master of Malt portfolio and they invited 10 whisky blogs, including us, from around the world to take part. Each blog was sent an identical pack containing numerous whisky samples of differing ages and styles, plus various shapes and size of measuring equipment. Our brief was to create our own blend from what was provided and send back the recipe to Master of Malt. This was done with much fun, experimentation and stress along the way. To read our perspective and findings on this first part of the process, click here.
Well, now the second part of the process is upon us. Master of Malt have now created each of the 10 whisky blend recipes that they received from the bloggers and have packaged them up in a set (pictured, above).
Naturally, we would love for this to be a success and have enjoyed taking part to date. We are proud of the blend that we have produced. However, the process doesn't end here ... within the set is also a voting form. Anyone that buys The Blogger's Blend set gets the chance to choose the winning blend from the 10 on offer. You simply pick your favourite, mark the corresponding number (1-10) on the form and send it back to Master of Malt! To remove any possible bias towards one blog or another, Master of Malt have not revealed which blog's whisky relates to which numbered sample.
We plan to review each blend in the set shortly and will continue to report on the further stages of the process, which includes the selection of the winning blend plus the naming of the whisky and the designing of the label. If you buy The Blogger's Blend set, then let us know what you think and hope that you enjoy the 10 whiskies!

The Glenlivet > Single malt range gets a revamp
The Glenlivet, which is one of the most iconic single malts and second best selling in the world (behind Glenfiddich), have announced new packaging for their range of whiskies. The 12 years old remains unchanged in its green bottle, while the 15 years old will be sold in clear (rather than the previous green) glass for the first time, so as to show the rich golden colour. Both will be presented in a new luxury carton. The 18 years old (the most highly awarded whisky in the range) and the limited edition Nadurra series will move to the premium bottle shape used for the 21 years old and 25 years old expressions. This shape includes a heavier base, broader shoulders and a shorter neck. The 18 years old will also get a permanent gift box rather than the current cardboard carton. In addition to the different packaging, the embossed stamp of the distillery's founding family (George & J. G. Smith) plus the foundation date of 1824 have been given more prominence on all bottlings.Glenmorangie > new luxury Pride 1981 announced
