Inbox - The Week's Whisky News (July 10, 2020)

Welcome to Inbox, our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our WFE email. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday. Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.

In this unprecedented time it is starting to seem that the whisky world is beginning to return to a new form of normality. During the Covid-19 worldwide lockdown some brands have continued to release new whiskies and many have adapted to produce hand sanitiser, donate cash to the bar trade or bring us online tastings. Now it is the turn of the hospitality industry to begin re-opening and we will follow with interest how that goes. Here the new releases from this week ...

________

Michter's
The American whiskey brand of Michter's has announced details of its annual aged straight rye release - the Michter's 10 years old Single Barrel Rye 2020 Edition. This will be the only rye bottling of the year from the brand and also features a high percentage of rye along with corn and malted barley in the mashbill. The bottling strength is 46.4% ABV (92.8 Proof). It will be available in limited quantities from late-July via selected retailers across the USA and will cost $160 US per 75cl bottle.

"There is nothing quite like rye distillate that has been aged for over a decade in a toasted and charred barrel and then in a warehouse that has been heat cycled. This makes the whiskey perfect for sipping."
Andrea Wilson - Master of Maturation at Michter's.

Spirit of Yorkshire
The English single malt distillery Spirit of Yorkshire has announced the release of their fourth limited edition whisky - the Filey Bay STR Finish. It follows two batches of regular Filey Bay that were matured in ex-bourbon casks, plus the Filey Bay Moscatel Finish. The single malt was distilled in 2016 and matured in ex-bourbon casks, before being transferred to ex-Rioja wine STR barriques. The release is limited to 6,000 bottles and is available via www.spiritofyorkshire.com and selected specialist whisky retailers. A bottle will cost £60/ $76 US.

"Our STR casks held Rioja red wine for around five years and this creates a complex whisky but one that is underpinned by our light and fruity house style".
Joe Clark - Whisky Director at Spirit of Yorkshire.
