Welcome to Inbox, our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our WFE email. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday. Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information. Here is the news from this week ...
________
The Speyside distillery of Glenallachie has announced its first ever batch of 21 years old single malt. The Glenallachie 21 years old Batch One has been created from just five ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, both puncheons and hogsheads, that were hand-selected by Billy Walker - the Master Distiller and owner of Glenallachie. These have yielded just 1,600 bottles that will be available in limited quantities in selcted world markets. The release is planned to be an annual event. It is bottled at the natural cask strength of 51.4% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. A bottle will cost £199/ $265 US.
The north Highland distillery of Glenmorangie has announced the latest whisky in its small-batch Barrel Select Release series - the Glenmorangie Malaga Cask Finish. The new whisky is bottled at 12 years of age. The spirit was originally matured in ex-bourbon barrels for eight years before a four year finishing period in ex-Malaga 'dulce' casks. Malaga is a sweet fortified wine made in the southern Spanish city of Malaga and its environs, and is rarely used to mature Scotch whisky. These were sourced by Dr. Bill Lumsden, the Director of Whisky Creation at Glenmorangie.
Glenmorangie Malaga Cask Finish is bottled at 47.3% ABV and is available from the Clos 19 website and specialist whisky retailers. The exact number of bottles was not revealed in the press release, but each will cost £75/ $98 US.
"The aromas and tastes of Glenmorangie Malaga Cask Finish take me straight back to the sun-kissed south of Spain, where Malaga’s famed fortified wines are made. By finishing in these ‘dulce’ casks, we have created an indulgently sweet and rich small-batch single malt for our Barrel Select Release."Dr. Bill Lumsden.
The family-owned independent bottler of Gordon & Macphail have announced the third whisky in their Last Casks series - the Mosstowie 1979 Vintage 40 years old. It is their last remaining stock from the Mosstowie distillery, which was located within the Miltonduff distillery and only operated for 17 years between 1964 and 1981. The whisky was filled to a re-fill ex-sherry hogshead (cask #20323) in September 1979 and has remained in G&M's warehouses in Elgin ever since.
There are just 164 bottles of the Mosstowie 1979 40 years old and these are released at the natural cask strength of 49.8% ABV. The whisky is non chill-filtered and of natural colour. It will be available globally from selected specialist whisky retailers. A bottle will cost £1,500/ $1,970 US.
"Each of the extremely rare whiskies released to commemorate our 125th anniversary are the last cask of that particular distillery that we have. With no official bottling ever available of the elusive Mosstowie malt, we are particularly excited to bring this whisky to the market."Stephen Rankin - Director of Prestige at G&M.
