Inbox - The Week's Whisky News (September 4, 2020)

Welcome to Inbox, our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our WFE email. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday. Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information. Here is the news from this week ...

Gordon & MacPhail
The family owned independent bottler of Gordon & MacPhail have announced a new series of rare whiskies and the first whisky in that series as they continue their 125th anniversary celebrations. The Last Casks will see four rarely seen single malts released periodically over the coming months. The first is the Coleburn 1972. The Coleburn distillery is located just four miles from G&M's Elgin home and closed in 1985. It has been maturing for its entire life in a re-fill ex-sherry puncheon (Cask #3511) and this has yielded just 363 bottles at a punchy 62.4% ABV. A bottle will cost £1,500 and is available from the G&M website.

"The whiskies chosen for The Last Casks are all unique and seldom seen in the market. They are literally the final remaining stocks we have from these distilleries and marks an emotional moment for my family after being left to mature by my grandfather many decades ago."
Stephen Rankin - Director of Prestige at G&M.

Hunter Laing
The independent bottler, blender and whisky producer of Hunter Laing & Co. have revealed a major rebranding for their Hepburn's Choice range of small batched single malts. The redesign is inspired by Managing Director Stuart Laing's maternal grandfather, William Hepburn and his travels around the world in the Diplomatic Service in the 1960s.

New features include colour coding to show the Scottish region of origin and large graphic numbers to show age. The Hepburn's Choice range are bottled at 46% ABV and are always no chill-filtered and of natural colour. The new look collection will be available via specialist whisky retailers shortly.

"We are extremely proud of the new design. The aim was to produce a refreshing, colourful, vibrant look and feel that would catch the eye of whisky fans worldwide, with a nod to our family heritage."
Stuart Laing.

Johnnie Walker
The world's leading Scotch whisky brand continues its 200th anniversary celebrations with the release of a book by Dr. Nicholas Morgan. Johnnie Walker : A Long Stride - The Story of the World's No.1 Scotch Whisky is the first ever book on the history of the brand and business. Starting with the brand's roots in John Walker's grocery store in Kilmarnock the book charts the creation and evolution of Johnnie Walker, as well as reflecting on John Walker himself and the growth of the wider Scotch whisky industry in general. Dr. Morgan has spent the last three years working on the project and the book is published on October 29th. A copy will cost £16.99 and will be available from major retailers such as Amazon and Waterstones.

Jura
The island distillery of Jura has announced a new limited edition single malt that is the second release in its Cask Editions Series - the Jura Winter Edition. The series highlights the role of different casks on a whisky during maturation and this bottling follows the Red Wine Cask release from earlier in the year. The Winter Edition has been matured in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in Spanish ex-sherry casks. It is bottled at 40% ABV and will be available in the UK, exclusively at supermarket Tesco to begin with. A one litre bottle will cost £44.

"I am really passionate about exploring the flavours that we can unlock within the Jura spirit. With the new Winter Edition we have created the perfect single malt for the forthcoming festive season."
Gregg Glass - Whisky Maker at Whyte & Mackay.
