Inbox / The Week's Whisky News (June 25, 2021)

Welcome to Inbox, our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our WFE email. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday. Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.

Here is the round-up of this week's news ...

________

Douglas Laing

The family-owned independent bottler and whisky makers of Douglas Laing & Co. have announced two new additions to The Epicurean blended malt range - The Epicurean Ruby Port Single Cask and Tawny Port Single Cask. Both go into the brand's limited edition Wood Series range and as with all expressions of The Epicurean feature only Lowland single malts.

For both expressions the whisky was first matured in American oak ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred for a 12 month finishing period to an ex-Ruby Port and ex-Tawny Port single cask respectively. These were sourced by the company from the famous Douro Valley in Portugal.

Both whiskies are released at 48% ABV and are non chill-filtered and of natural colour. They will be available in limited numbers via specialist retailers in selected world markets and from www.douglaslaing.com. Exact numbers were not revealed in the press release. The price will be £60/ €70 per bottle.

Michter's
The Kentucky-based American whiskey brand of Michter's has announced the addition of two new rye expressions for 2021. The latest edition of the Michter's Straight Rye 10 years old (pictured, left) will be released in the USA in July and is limited to just one single barrel of whiskey. It is bottled at 46.4% ABV (92.8 Proof) and will retail for $170 a bottle. The second expression is the Michter's US*1 Barrel Strength Rye, which is also a single cask. This has been bottled at 55.1% ABV (110.2 Proof) and will be available exclusively in the UK. A bottle will cost £96.

Both whiskeys were created by Dan McKee, the Master Distiller for Michter's, and Angela Wilson, the Master of Maturation. They will be the only new releases from the brand this year.

"We wish we had more 10 year old Straight Rye whiskey to share but these expressions require time and attention to detail to reach the peak quality level for which Michter's is known. Despite the limited stocks, we believe drinkers will be thrilled with the results of this year’s efforts."
Dan McKee.
