Review - Glenmorangie Allta

The Allta is the latest whisky in the annual Private Editions series from the popular north Highland distillery of Glenmorangie. The bottling also marks the 10th anniversary of the innovative series and this year explores the realm of yeast. This stems from a moment when Dr. Bill Lumsden (the brand's Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks) discovered wild yeast on ears of Cadboll barley growing next to the distillery. This yeast was then cultivated and used during the fermentation stage of Allta's production.

Review - Glenmorangie Spìos

The Spìos is a new limited edition single malt from the famous north Highland distillery of Glenmorangie. It is the ninth expression in their annual Private Edition series, which looks to add a twist to the light and delicate Glenmorangie house style. This year's expression sees Glenmorangie fully matured in American ex-rye whiskey casks. These were sourced by Dr. Bill Lumsden (the brand's Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks) on a trip to the USA in the late 1990s.

Review - Glenmorangie Bacalta

The Bacalta is a new limited edition single malt whisky from the famous north Highland distillery of Glenmorangie.  It is the eighth release in their award-winning annual Private Edition range.  As with the previous editions this whisky is the brainchild of Dr. Bill Lumsden - the Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks at Glenmorangie.  Bacalta translates as 'baked' from Gaelic and refers to the ex-Malmsey Madeira wine casks used to finish this whisky.  These were filled with wine and left to mature and bake in the sun on the island of Madeira.  They were then emptied and transferred to Scotland to be filled with part-matured Glenmorangie whisky to create Bacalta.

Review - Glenmorangie Milsean

This whisky is the latest to be released in to the annual Private Edition series from Glenmorangie.  The series is designed to showcase the continued creativity and innovation that has long been a hallmark of the north Highland distillery.  The Milsean (pronounced meel-shawn and meaning 'sweet things' in Gaelic) is the seventh such release in the Private Edition series and takes it in yet another different direction.  This new expression has been part matured for almost three years in ex-Portuguese red wine casks, which were heavily toasted before filling.  This has the effect of re-caramelising the natural sugars in the wood.

Review - Glenmorangie 'Tùsail'

This whisky is a brand new single malt from Glenmorangie and is the latest release in its popular annual Private Edition series. The sixth expression, named Tùsail, marks a change in direction for the series. Most of the previous expressions have concentrated on the type of cask used during maturation - Sonnalta used Pedro Ximenez casks, Artein used Sassicaia wine barriques, Ealanta used virgin toasted oak casks and last year's Companta used French red wine barriques.  Finealta, the second release, was smoky.

New release - Glenmorangie Companta

Each January Glenmorangie launch a new addition to their highly acclaimed Private Edition series. This is normally the first major new whisky release of each year and has the whisky fraternity waiting with eager anticipation. This year's bottling is named Companta and it follows on from the award winning Sonnalta, Finealta, Artein and Ealanta expressions. The name Companta translates as 'friendship' from Scots Gaelic and like the previous editions has undergone some experimental maturation.

New release - Glenmorangie Ealanta

The Ealanta is the fourth bottling in Glenmorangie's annual Private Edition range.  The name means 'skilled and ingenious' in Gaelic and the whisky follows the innovative track of the previous three releases in the series - the Sonnalta from 2010, Finealta from 2011 & Artein from 2012.  The Ealanta is 19 years of age and matured virgin American oak casks selected from the forests of the Ozark Mountains in Missouri, which were filled in 1993.  It has been bottled at 46% ABV and is available in specialist whisky retailers in the UK now for a recommended price of £75.
