Review / Diageo Special Releases 2021

The arrival of Autumn is always signalled by Diageo, Scotland's largest whisky producer, announcing the line-up for their annual Special Releases programme. Each year these bottlings are designed to highlight rare or old whiskies from within Diageo's extensive portfolio of maturing stocks and are eagerly anticipated each year since the series was first started with just three expressions in 2001. The 2021 collection marks the 20th anniversary of the Special Releases.

This year is one of the smaller recent collections and sees just eight bottlings. The eight have been put together to show the stories of whisky from different environments and terrains across Scotland. This incorporates a set of mythical creatures that reside in the sea, lochs and mountains and  can be seen on the packaging. The 2021 collection is subtitled Legends Untold as a result. The striking artwork has been created by illustrator Ken Taylor.

This set of single malts form the second line-up for the annual Prima & Ultima Collection from Diageo, Scotland's largest whisky producers. The 2021 Edition consists of eight rare bottlings and shows the diversity of maturing stock across Diageo's portfolio, both from current and closed distilleries. The whiskies were selected by Maureen Robinson, Senior Blender at Diageo, who has taken over the reigns from Jim Beveridge OBE. He curated the inaugural set in 2020.

Review / The Singleton of Dufftown 54 years old 'Paragon of Time'

This rare whisky is the second and final release in Diageo's The Singleton Paragon of Time Collection. The Singleton of Dufftown 54 years old is the oldest ever single malt to be bottled by the company or the Speyside distillery of Dufftown. The whisky was distilled in 1966 and was filled to a European oak cask that has yielded just 235 bottles. The cask was selected by Maureen Robinson, the Master Blender for The Singleton, who gave it a final carefully monitored and short finishing period in a single ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry cask.

Review - The Singleton of Glen Ord 38 years old

This whisky is a new and exceptionally rare single malt from the Highland distillery of Glen Ord, which is released under The Singleton label. The Singleton of Glen Ord 38 years old has been created using just eight cask by Maureen Robinson, the Master Blender for The Singleton brand since it was first released in 2004. The whisky has been in these casks for the final 26 years of its life after being earmarked for greatness when only 12 years of age. This is the longest secondary maturation in The Singleton history. These casks are ex-bourbon, ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry and virgin American oak, which have then been married back together to create this 38 years old.

Review - The Singleton of Glendullan 12 years old

This whisky forms part of a wider range of whiskies that come under The Singleton umbrella. The brand, which first appeared on the market in 2006, is actually a collection of three different distilleries - Dufftown and Glendullan in Speyside and Glen Ord in the Highlands. Between them they have contributed to The Singleton becoming the 4th biggest selling single malt in the world*. The concept includes each distillery only being available in selected markets to cater for regional tastes. The Glendullan expressions are primarily sold in north America, while Dufftown is primarily available in Europe and Glen Ord in Asia.

Distillery Visit - Glen Ord

The Glen Ord distillery is located on the edge of the north Highland village of Muir of Ord. On a bleak October afternoon, and with a couple of spare hours to hand, I decided to take the short but scenic train ride from Inverness. The visit was one of nostalgia. Much like the trip to Glenmorangie earlier in the year, Glen Ord was one of the first distilleries that we visited on our fledgling whisky journey.

This year has been another productive year for the whisky industry. Many companies are developing and releasing more products than ever to meet or drive consumer demand, as the category continues to grow in both sales and consumption across the globe. It is impossible to sample every new release, but we have been lucky to try some of them through this blog. A huge thank you to all of the brands and PR agencies that continue to send us samples, support us and invite us to events.

Diageo have announced the eleven whiskies that will make up the 2014 Special Releases collection, which is due for release very shortly. This programme highlights some of the most exceptional single malt stock from within their portfolio of 28 working distilleries, plus remaining stocks from those which have been closed. The collection again places well known flagship distilleries alongside very rare stock from the iconic Brora and Port Ellen, both of which closed in 1983.

New releases - Singleton of Dufftown 'Sunray' & 'Tailfire'

The Sunray and Tailfire are two new expressions that will be joining the Singleton of Dufftown range.  The names draw inspiration from the brand's logo of a leaping salmon - sunray and tailfire are types of artificial fly used in salmon fishing.  Both new single malts will sit alongside the 12, 15 and 18 years old whiskies that currently make up the core range and have just been released in selected European markets of Belgium, Denmark, France, Holland, Switzerland and the UK.  Sunray has also been released in Germany, with Tailfire following in the Summer.

New releases - Diageo Special Releases 2013 (Part 2)

This year's selection of whiskies for the Diageo Special Releases is one of the largest in recent years.  Therefore, we have decided to split our review in to two parts - Part 1 appeared towards the end of last week and can be read by clicking here.  All of the whiskies are bottled at the natural cask strength, are non chill filtered and each one is a limited edition. As in previous years the collection places some well-known flagship distilleries, such as Cardhu, Lagavulin, Oban and Talisker, alongside very rare stock from the closed distilleries of Brora, Convalmore and Port Ellen.

Inbox Special - Diageo Special Releases 2013

Around this time each year, there is always a ripple of anticipation around the whisky industry as people wait to see what Diageo, Scotland's largest producer of single malt whisky, are to release in their annual Special Releases programme.

This programme is designed to showcase some of the most exceptional single malt stock from within their portfolio of 28 working distilleries, plus remaining stocks from those which have been closed. Some of these stocks have dwindled to almost critical levels. Now the waiting is over for this year, as they have announced the line up and details for the Special Releases 2013.  They will be available from late October.

This year's selection of whiskies (pictured, above) are bottled at the natural cask strength, are non chill filtered and all are limited edition. The collection again places well known flagship distilleries, such as Cardhu, Lagavulin and Talisker, alongside very rare stock from the iconic closed distilleries of Brora and Port Ellen. The details are below ...

Have just tried - The Singleton of Glen Ord 15 years old

A couple of days ago, we received a press release from Diageo saying that one of their whiskies had won a major prize at the International Wine & Spirits Competition, one of the industry's most prestigious awards ceremonies.  The whisky in question was The Singleton of Glen Ord 15 years old and the prize was 'The Trophy', which is awarded to the best whisky that is 15 years old or less.

Normally, we don't pay much attention to such PR releases, as there are now so many whisky competitions and awards that it is difficult to keep track, but this one struck a chord with us.  The reason being that we recently purchased a bottle of this very whisky.  Another reason is that last week I met up with Maureen Robinson at a Diageo event - she is one of Diageo's Master Blenders and the woman responsible for creating The Singleton of Glen Ord 15 years old a couple of years ago.

The Singleton name covers a range of whiskies which highlight some of the lesser known single malts in Diageo's portfolio of 28 distilleries.  There are currently three featured distilleries - Dufftown, Glendullan and Glen Ord - and each one is pitched in to a different consumer market.  The Singleton of Dufftown 12 years old is available in the UK (it is also available in the travel retail sector, along with 15 and 18 years old expressions), the Singleton of Glendullan 12 years old is exclusive to the USA and the Singleton of Glen Ord is available as 12, 15 and 18 year old expressions in south east Asia.

The Glen Ord distillery was founded in 1838 by Thomas Mackenzie.  It was originally named simply Ord, before becoming Glenoran in 1882.  It became know as Glen Ord in 1923, when it was sold to the famous blending company John Dewar & Sons.  Glen Ord is currently owned by Diageo and is fairly large with an annual production capacity of five million litres.  Much of the whisky produced at Glen Ord is used for blending with a small percentage being released as single malt.  This means that it is little known to a wider whisky audience in most parts of the world, with the exception of south east Asia and Japan which is its stronghold.

It was for this reason amongst others that Diageo decided to bottle The Singleton of Glen Ord series for that region of the world.  When proposing the launch of this 15 years old expression, Maureen Robinson went out to south east Asia with numerous samples and sat down with selected consumer groups to determine the flavour profile and characteristics of the final whisky.  It has been bottled at 40% ABV and we paid around £40-45 for a one litre bottle in Kuala Lumpur airport.

Our tasting notes
The colour is a bright golden amber and the nose shows some early clean, sweet and tangy aromas - think of sultanas, raisins, honey, brown sugar and bitter orange.  Underneath is a distinct aroma of bittersweet malty cereal grains and an increasingly prominent note of sugar syrup.  There is a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg spice in the background.  The combination is very appealing.

On the palate , this whisky feels soft, velvety and rich but with a tangy edge that is never far away.  This tangy quality is again reminiscent of bitter orange/ candied orange peel.  This is complimented by a delicious sweetness which is led by notes of honey, vanilla, brown sugar and dark dried fruits (especially sultanas and raisins).  Further complexity is added by some robust malty cereal notes, which grip the taste buds and don't let go easily.  In the background are some subtle wood spice characteristics (think of the cinnamon and nutmeg from the nose again) and a faint hint of peat smoke.  This smoke feels slightly earthy and has the feel of cigar smoke about it.

The finish is lovely and of decent length, with the elements fading slowly.  First to go is the tangy orange note, then the sweeter honey, vanilla and fruit.  This leaves the robust malty cereals, woody spices and that merest hint of smoke to battle it out to the end.

What's the verdict?
The Singleton of Glen Ord 15 years old is a lovely whisky and one that has plenty of character and interest for the drinker, but without being too complicated.  The nose smells very sweet but these notes are balanced by others which stop it becoming too sweet and cloying.  There is a clear yet sympathetic use of ex-sherry casks here, which when combined with some ex-bourbon casks have created an easy drinking single malt.

We are glad that we have picked up a bottle on our travels and would urge anyone to do the same if travelling in south east Asia.  It seems a shame that a whisky of this quality should be restricted to one market in the world, but that is how many whisky companies operate these days.  What this whisky does show is that there are some very good whiskies coming out of the lesser known Scottish distilleries and Glen Ord is one of those 'hidden gems'.
